Information about Cocaine Addiction Treatment

Historically cocaine was grown in Colombia where the plant’s leaves were put into teas, chewed for energy and used in tonics/other home remedies. Cocaine is the second most popular drug (behind marijuana) being consumed by Americans today. It affects people of all ages, from high school students to adults. The drug has a large appeal because it gives users more energy, increases confidence, may increase productivity, suppresses appetite and allows individuals to stay up for days. Cocaine is a powerful drug because it cannot only change an addict’s body, but affects their brain and emotional function, too. Some common physical side effects are: constricting of blood vessels (which can lead to heart attacks or strokes), seizures and/or respiratory failure. The drug affects addicts’ behavior too, leaving individuals feeling paranoid, angry, hostile and/or anxious. The substance also causes the neurotransmitter, dopamine, to build up past regular levels—the body then adjusts by producing less. Leaving the addicting needing more of the drug in order to increase the amount of dopamine. As addiction takes over the individuals’ life, the drug becomes the center of their existence while eradicating the other facets of their social life.

Treatment of a cocaine addiction is crucial in the recovery of an addict. Finding a drug treatment center to receive treatment for a cocaine addiction is ideal because the addict has the opportunity to learn necessary coping skills to help deal with stresses that come up in daily life.
